October 10, 1973 - Spiro Agnew Resigns as Vice President
Spiro T. Agnew, the 39th Vice President of the United States, submits a letter of resignation to the White House. The move comes after Agnew entered a "no contest" plea and paid $160,000 in back taxes amid charges that he failed to record cash contributions on his tax returns. On Oct. 12, 1973, President Richard M. Nixon will use his 25th Amendment authority to appoint Gerald R. Ford vice president.
