November 18, 2003 - Massachusetts Legalizes Gay Marriage
The Massachusetts Supreme Court rules 4-3 that the Massachusetts Constitution does not support a ban on gay marriage. The court sets May 17, 2004 as the date the marriages may begin, making Massachusetts the only state in the U.S. to legally recognize gay marriage.
