January 6, 2001 - Congress Certifies Bush as Winner of 2000 Election
A joint session of Congress meets to conduct the official tally of the electoral votes for the 2000 presidential election. After almost two months of controversy surrounding the outcome of the election -- including numerous vote recounts, a U.S. Supreme Court decision blocking a recount in Florida, and Democratic candidate Al Gore's concession of defeat -- Republican George W. Bush is officially certified as the winner of the 2000 election.
